Welcome to SIPS 2022

Welcome to SIPS 2022

Meetings of the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science (SIPS) differ from most professional society meetings. At SIPS, there is very little sitting around listening to people talk about their research. Instead, most of the time at a SIPS meeting is spent working collaboratively on projects aimed at improving psychological science. We actually get things done. SIPS meetings also typically include a number of hands-on workshops (e.g., learning R, Bayesian stats, meta-analytic techniques, etc.).

SIPS 2022 will be sited in the Victoria Conference Centre, which is attached to the Empress Hotel. Victoria is the capital of the province of British Columbia. Victoria is on the tip of Vancouver Island, southwest of the mainland city of Vancouver and northwest of Seattle. Victoria has a population of about 370,000 and it attracts vast numbers of tourists every summer. For tourist information including video, see Tourism Victoria.

Registration Policies

Registration for the meeting will be first-come, first-served for both in-person and virtual registrants. We will cap registration at 400 in-person attendees and 1,000 virtual attendees. Individuals may cancel their registration and receive a refund for any reason up to 30 days before the meeting (May 28, 2022). Registrants may also switch their attendance modality up to 30 days before the meeting, assuming spots remain available. Registrants must write to sips@improvingpsych.org to switch their modality. If spots remain available in the 30 days before the conference, new registrants will continue to be accepted. However, it will not be possible to switch from in-person to virtual attendance within 30 days of the meeting. Additionally, cancellations within 30 days of the meeting may only be refunded at 50%. Please contact sips@improvingpsych.org with any questions about these policies.

Conference Funding

SIPS has made a limited number of funds available to support SIPS members to attend the SIPS 2022 Meeting. We offer:

1) Student and postdoc travel support ($400) – These awards support student and postdoc members of SIPS who don’t have access to other travel funds to attend the in-person meeting.

2) Diversity travel support ($400) – These awards support all members of SIPS (whether student, postdoc, or career-level) who don’t have access to other travel funds to attend the in-person meeting. The awards are intended to increase the conference’s diversity and to promote greater inclusion of underrepresented groups in the in-person meeting, including individuals who work outside the United States, Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, or Oceania, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, and first-generation college students.

3) Caregiving support ($300) – These awards support individuals who have financial need for childcare or other caregiving support to be able to attend the SIPS meeting. Awards apply to both in-person and remote attendees.

4) Internet/technology funds ($50) – These awards support individuals who have financial need for internet access to attend the meeting remotely.

You may apply for all funding opportunities that are relevant to you. Awards will be made based on a lottery to applicants who meet the qualifications (see below). For travel funds, should you win multiple awards, you will only be awarded one to accommodate as many applicants as possible.

If you are not yet a member of SIPS, you can join here: improvingpsych.org/join. Dues waivers are available.

Applications are closed and awards have been announced.

COVID Precautions

SIPS will follow the local regulations regarding COVID-19 mitigation and may impose more stringent requirements if needed to ensure an equitable experience for all attendees. Currently, visitors to Canada must have received two doses of an approved vaccine, but entry testing is no longer required. Mask mandates have been lifted in British Columbia, but we intend to require masks at the meeting. Please see Canadian travel information and British Columbia restrictions for up to date information.
