Welcome to SIPS 2023

Welcome to SIPS 2023

Virtual registration for SIPS 2023 is now closed. In-person registrants who have not registered yet will need to register on site.

We are very pleased to announce that SIPS 2023 will be held at the School of Psychology of the University of Padova, Italy. The University of Padova (founded in 1222) is the fifth oldest university in the world and has just celebrated its 800th birthday: what a wonderful opportunity to host a SIPS meeting! Here Galileo Galilei contributed to develop the scientific method. We hope this eighth SIPS meeting will be as fruitful.

Padova is located in the North-East of the country, 30 km (20 miles) from Venezia (Venice). It is a very beautiful and historical city, relatively unspoiled by tourism in comparison to Venice and Verona. The local university  is also one of the largest in Italy (60,000 students) with the School of Psychology being the largest in Italy. You will see just a fraction of the more than 5000 psychology students as the semester will be over during SIPS. However, we are sure that you will get the vibe of a real university city during your stay.

SIPS’ meetings differ from most professional society meetings. At SIPS, there is very little sitting around listening to people talk about their research. Instead, most of the time is spent working collaboratively on projects aimed at improving psychological science. We actually get things done! SIPS meetings also include a number of hands-on workshops.

Individuals may cancel their registration and receive a refund for any reason up to 41 days before the meeting (May 12, 2023). Registrants may also switch their attendance modality up to 41 days before the meeting, assuming spots remain available. Registrants must write to sips@improvingpsych.org to switch their modality. If spots remain available in the 41 days before the conference, new registrants will continue to be accepted. However, it will not be possible to switch from in-person to virtual attendance within 41 days of the meeting. Additionally, cancellations within 41 days of the meeting may only be refunded at 50%. Please contact sips@improvingpsych.org with any questions about these policies.

Conference Funding

SIPS has made a limited number of funds available to support SIPS members to attend the SIPS 2023 Meeting. We offer:

1) Student and postdoc travel support ($400 + free meeting registration) – These awards support student and postdoc members of SIPS who don’t have access to other travel funds to attend the in-person meeting.

2) Diversity travel support ($400 + free meeting registration) – These awards support all members of SIPS (whether student, postdoc, or career-level) who don’t have access to other travel funds to attend the in-person meeting. The awards are intended to increase the conference’s diversity and to promote greater inclusion of underrepresented groups in the in-person meeting, including individuals who work outside the United States, Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, or Oceania, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, and first-generation college students.

3) Caregiving support ($300) – These awards support individuals who have financial need for childcare or other caregiving support to be able to attend the SIPS meeting. Awards apply to both in-person and remote attendees.

4) Internet/technology funds ($50) – These awards support individuals who have financial need for internet access to attend the meeting remotely.

5) Fetzer Franklin fund ($2000) – These awards support in-person meeting attendance for researchers living and working outside of North America, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand. (This is a grant funded opportunity that is projected to end in 2023.)

You may apply for all funding opportunities that are relevant to you. Awards will be made based on a lottery to applicants who meet the qualifications. For travel funds, should you win multiple awards, you will only be awarded one to accommodate as many applicants as possible.

If you are not yet a member of SIPS, you can join here: improvingpsych.org/join. Dues waivers are available.

COVID Precautions

SIPS will follow the local regulations regarding COVID-19 mitigation and may impose more stringent requirements if needed to ensure an equitable experience for all attendees. Please see the current Italian travel requirements at this link. We will post updates here as the conference draws nearer.
